Selfies Are Actually A Blessing In Disguise

Selfie (noun) – An annoying action that a human performs in attempt to take a “worthy” picture of themselves with every intention of posting it to a social media sight in order to seek attention/approval from others.

That honest definition is very hard to disagree with.

When I first noticed people taking selfies of themselves, I thought it was super embarrassing. Like, it’s totally okay if someone wants to take a picture of you and your friends. But sitting there in the bar snapping 9 selfies of yourself with your drink, come on girl. Hey I was right there in the same boat with ya, shaking my head and rolling my eyes those people too. Because many people feel so strongly towards selfie use in public.

But, it is 2014 people. We live in a digital age where everybody is on their cell phones, tablets, iPads, MacBooks, or waiting for someone to contact them on one of those devices. As an assignment for my class we were asked to take a side; for or against the use of selfies. As you can imagine, many people stood on the against side. Since I enjoy a challenge, I chose to stand on the other side of the selfie and defend it.

I feel as if a lot of people have been so caught up, worrying about what other people are thinking about them when they are taking their selfie that they do not do it, or would choose not to take a picture of themselves in public.

Before this digital age, people actually used cameras; Polaroids, digital cameras, and so on. I remember when I was in 8th grade, I got my first cell phone (yes it was a flip-phone). I never really took too many pictures. But I wish I would have took more, in fact I wish I would have took as many pictures then as I did now. And you wanna know why?

MEMORIES.

It is exciting to look back on old photos and say, “Aw I remember this” or “This was so much fun.” I love when my mom takes out the buckets and buckets of old pictures and we can reminisce on fun times spent together. Also, when you get older and have your own children it will be fun to show them what you looked like at their age. The picture you will show them might just be a selfie.

Another important point I made in my defense argument for the selfies, was that sometimes in our busy days we do not get a chance to see our loved ones regularly. It is nice to see someone’s face (in a selfie) if you don’t get to see them in person. It can even make you feel like you are closer to them just by seeing their picture. Before social media, it made it hard to see that person’s face without having to send out pictures to x amount of people or even be able to keep up with your life. But it is very easy to snap a photo of yourself and post it.

So there you have it folks, whether you are a selfie taker or a selfie hater think about it this way, consider it a blessing that you get to see that person’s face on your news feed today. Some people do not have that luxury and truly wish they did.

Xoxo,

A Guy’s Girl
